This was recently on ADDitude Magazine and I couldn’t resist the urge to make a comment or two and maybe, just maybe, a few different insights. Go figure!
Here are the 10 Conditions:
1. ADHD and Depression
2. ADHD and Learning Disabilities
3. ADHD and Anxiety
4. ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder
5. ADHD and Bipolar Disorder
6. ADHD and Sensory Processing Disorder
7. ADHD and Autism
8. ADHD and Substance Abuse
9. ADHD and Tourette's Syndrome
10.ADHD and Conduct Disorder
I am going to take them in order, after all, I have to be traditional somehow, don’t I?
Over several posts I am going review each of these and share what you may find are unique perspectives. I want you to keep in mind we have an over 20% misdiagnoses rate, according National Institute of Health, one of the highest. Also note it’s very difficult to get rid of a label once it has been given. I suspect the misdiagnoses rate would be even higher if they would remove the ADHD label once the real diagnosis was discovered. Whether that be another condition, or environmental circumstances that may range from bad diet to bad parenting to abuse. But the AMA is not known for wanting to take ownership when it is wrong and would rather bury a diagnosis.
With ADHD having an incredibly high co-morbid rate of 80%, something is just not adding up. Our symptom focused world of medicine is causing at least as many problems as it is solving, and in some cases more. Fifteen-minute doctor visits, doctor’s continuing education credits being largely underwritten by pharmaceutical companies, and decisions being made which fly in the face of what our own institutions have shown us concerning many of these issues.
Someone is playing parents, specifically, and American people, in general, as fools. We are all being treated like rubes at a carnival and getting fleeced by our drug companies, by companies like General Mills and Monsanto, by our media but mostly, by our own government. I am not talking about conspiracy theory, I am talking about groups of people who spend lots of money to make lots and lots of money and they spend it in Washington. The money they have to spend is the money we rubes are getting fleeced for--whether it’s through what we are charged, what we are paid, or what we are manipulated (sometimes even bullied) into spending which keeps the bribery loop (called lobbyist) alive.
