Last week on my radio show, I talked about ending sexual violence, and rape being an act of power, not sex. We have to take a look at what's amiss in our world specifically in the United States, where 52% of women report experiencing violence at some point in their life.
For my weekly hot topic, I discuss what's really irritating me. Another thing that came up for me this week was race. There were more discussions this week about the issue of the Washington Redskins football team's name being inappropriate. People say they should change their name and logo. I don't want to be disrespectful, but I have an issue with the way political correctness has begun to reign. There's a small vocal minority using it as a soapbox. The larger majority doesn't really give a sweet care. It's just another way we get wrapped up and avoid dealing with the real issues.
A second issue regarding race this week was call for reparations for African Americans whose ancestors were slaves. I've heard this before, and each time I wonder why we're not talking about reparations for Native Americans. I don't condone slavery. What we did to the Native Americans, who were on this land before us immigrants, was just as bad as slavery. You can't compare suffering with suffering; it's bad either way.
The point I want to leave you with is this: we have to let go of the past, stay in the now, and move forward. Focusing on the past doesn't always help us make steps to go toward a more positive future.
